Bangladesh Police personnel have formally requested a separate pay scale and a comprehensive package of benefits from the government. The demands include a 50% overtime allowance, increased risk pay, and honorary promotions for retiring officers.

The requests were presented to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during a "Welfare Parade" held at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium on Sunday (May 10), following the conclusion of Police Week events.

The Prime Minister reportedly listened to the grievances attentively and assured the force that the government would work toward implementation.

The session was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Home Minister, Home Secretary, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Key Demands
Independent Pay Scale: Citing the existing separate scales for the Judiciary and the Military, police officials argued that a dedicated pay structure is necessary given the force's extensive service to the public.

Logistics for Investigators: Kamrul Hasan Talukdar, President of the Bangladesh Police Association and OC of Airport Thana, called for interest-free loans for Sub-Inspectors (SIs) to purchase motorcycles, alongside fuel allowances and increased investigation budgets to expedite casework.

Retirement Incentives: A proposal was made for honorary promotions for lower-ranking officers. Similar to the military's system, the goal is to ensure constables and inspectors receive at least one rank promotion before retirement without creating a significant financial burden on the state.

Infrastructure Funding: A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) noted that funding for new police buildings, barracks, and outposts has been stalled for a long period and requested the immediate resumption of these development projects.

Political Context
Addressing the force, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized a shift in the role of law enforcement. "Let us pledge today that no fascism or autocracy will ever again be able to use police members against the independence of the country and its people," he stated.

The Prime Minister also commended the force for its professional conduct during the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

A formal meeting between the Prime Minister and senior police leadership is scheduled for Monday (May 11) at the Prime Minister’s Office to further discuss these administrative and financial reforms.
