Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced that the current government will construct the Teesta Barrage alongside the Padma Barrage.

The Prime Minister made these remarks on Wednesday morning (May 20) after inaugurating the country’s first National Disaster Management and Training Institute in Gazipur.

"While many talk big, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is the only party that campaigned for Bangladesh's fair share of the Teesta River waters," the Prime Minister stated.

He further emphasized the need to increase domestic food production while reducing reliance on underground water sources, adding that the current government is progressively fulfilling the electoral promises made to the public.

It is worth noting that the government is set to construct a new barrage on the Padma River at an estimated cost of approximately 35,000 crore BDT. This mega project will be implemented over the next seven years through self-funding.

Once completed, the project is expected to resolve water scarcity across 24 surrounding districts, benefiting around 70 million people.
