Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s first foreign invitation came from India. Shortly after the elections last February, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter inviting him to visit Delhi.
An invitation was also extended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, followed by another from Chinese Premier Li Qiang to visit Beijing.
Ultimately, instead of India or China, Tarique Rahman has chosen Malaysia for his first official foreign visit as the head of government.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that preparations have begun for the Prime Minister’s two-day state visit to Kuala Lumpur on June 21 and 22. They noted that the visit is taking place at the official invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
According to sources at the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian government formally confirmed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit via an official letter on Monday morning (June 1).
Discussions are currently underway to schedule the bilateral meeting between the two leaders on June 22, the second day of the visit.
While the agenda and detailed itinerary for the trip have not yet been finalized, diplomatic sources in Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur indicated that these details are expected to be locked in by next week.
