The Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, as well as the minister-in-charge of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat in Parliament, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has stated that the EC has already begun the necessary preparations to hold free, fair, and neutral local government elections.

He shared this information on Tuesday (30 June) in a written response to a question tabled by ruling party lawmaker Sheikh Md. Rezaul Islam (Naogaon-6) in the Jatiya Sangsad.

The Minister noted that the Election Commission has taken all necessary steps to ensure a credible, participatory, and fair local government election within the stipulated timeframe.

Replying to another query from opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Abdul Karim (Gaibandha-2), the Minister stated that the government currently has no plans to increase the salaries and allowances of Union Parishad chairmen and members.

Regarding the role of Members of Parliament (MPs) in Zila Parishads, Mirza Fakhrul explained that the MPs of the respective districts will serve as advisors to the Zila Parishads, providing guidance and advice in executing the council's activities.
