Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has emphasized that villages and rural regions serve as the bedrock of national development, stating that a prosperous Bangladesh cannot be realized without the advancement of its rural areas.

The Prime Minister made these remarks in a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, on the eve of the inaugural "National Rural Development Day-2026," observed on Monday, July 6.

Core Philosophy of Development
"To establish a just, participatory, and public welfare-oriented state, the current government aims to integrate every citizen into the mainstream of development," the Prime Minister stated.

He highlighted that the theme for this year’s inaugural observance—"Developed Rural Areas, Prosperous Nation, Bangladesh First"—is deeply aligned with the government's development philosophy and the aspirations of the people.

The Heart of the Economy
Prime Minister Rahman noted that rural Bangladesh is the lifeblood of the nation’s economy, culture, and social structure.

With approximately 68% of the population residing in villages, the rural sector—through agriculture, small-scale enterprises, and cottage industries—remains the primary driver of national progress.

"Rural development is not merely a sectoral program; it is the fundamental basis for building an inclusive and sustainable Bangladesh," he added.

A Legacy of Rural Empowerment
The Prime Minister reflected on the historical roadmap for rural development initiated by the late President Ziaur Rahman. In 1977, his 19-point program prioritized:

• Strengthening the rural economy through agricultural advancement.
• Decentralizing administrative and development activities.
• Empowering local government and strengthening the "Gram Sarkar" (Village Government) system.
• Achieving food self-sufficiency through extensive irrigation and infrastructure projects.

He further acknowledged the contributions of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, whose tenure focused on expanding rural infrastructure, easing access to agricultural inputs, and providing credit support to boost the rural economy.

Commitment to the 2026 Manifesto
Addressing the current administration's goals, the Prime Minister highlighted the implementation of initiatives outlined in the 2026 Election Manifesto, which aim to uplift marginalized rural populations. Key programs include:

• Farmer Cards and Family Cards for targeted support.
• Agricultural loan waivers and canal re-excavation projects.
• Development of rural infrastructure.
• Skill enhancement programs for women and youth.

Call to Action
The Prime Minister called upon the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as well as all stakeholders, to work with sincerity and dedication.

He expressed his firm belief that through public participation, innovative initiatives, and coordinated efforts, Bangladesh’s rural areas will become modern, productive, and prosperous—ultimately building a dignified and self-reliant nation.
