Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called upon students of all government primary schools across the country to plant at least one tree every year.

The Prime Minister made this appeal on Wednesday morning following the "Primary Education Medal-2026" award ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Following the ceremony, he formally inaugurated a nationwide tree plantation program for government primary schools.

Prior to the event, a press release from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education stated that as part of implementing the government’s 17th and 18th election manifesto pledges, various competitions—including sports, cultural activities, subject-based quizzes, Cub Scouts scouting, and debating—were organized to nurture the talents and intellectual growth of students from grades three to five.

These competitions were held in phases, beginning at the sub-district (upazila) level and culminating at the national level.

A total of 21,828,693 students across the country participated in these events. At the ceremony, the "Primary Education Medal-2026" was awarded to the top-performing students selected through these multi-stage competitions.

Furthermore, individuals and institutions were recognized for their significant contributions to the education sector.

Awards were presented to outstanding individuals selected from 12,384 candidates across 15 categories, and to top-performing institutions chosen from 65,546 applicants across two categories.

The program concluded with the Prime Minister formally initiating the tree plantation drive, which is set to be implemented in all government primary schools nationwide.
