Sergio Gor, the United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, is arriving in Dhaka today (Thursday, July 30) on a three-day visit. His visit has become a focal point of interest within the country's diplomatic circles.

According to diplomatic analysts, the visit holds special significance given Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China and Bangladesh's broader diplomatic engagements with various nations.

During his stay in Dhaka, the Special Envoy is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. He will also exchange views with leaders of various political parties, professionals, and representatives of civil society.

Additionally, he is scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar.

Gor's visit to Dhaka takes place against the backdrop of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visits to Malaysia and China since taking office as head of the new government.

A businessman by profession, Gor is one of the emerging leaders of the Republican Party in U.S. politics. Alongside serving as the U.S. Ambassador to India, he holds the position of Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.

Prior to this, he served as a director at the White House last year.

Bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India experienced a downturn following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in the 2024 mass uprising.

Gor is also expected to use his meetings in Dhaka to gain deeper insights into the future prospects and potential challenges of Bangladesh-India relations through closed-door discussions.
