The Cabinet has granted final approval to the draft of the "Special Response Battalion (SRB) Act, 2026" subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

Under this law, a provision has been made to dissolve the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and establish a specialized unit named the Special Response Battalion (SRB) under the police force.

The approval was given on Monday (August 17) during the 17th Cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat. The Cabinet Division disclosed this information in a press release later.

According to the press release, the draft of the "Special Response Battalion (SRB) Act, 2026" received final approval from the Cabinet, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

A notable feature of the law is the provision to dissolve the existing Rapid Action Battalion and establish a specialized unit called the Special Response Battalion (SRB) under the police force.

The press release also stated that provisions have been included to establish a multi-party grievance redressal committee to address citizens' complaints as well as internal grievances of unit members.

The Cabinet Division stated that provisions have been made to transfer RAB-related manpower, orders, powers, authority, privileges, funds, properties, accounts, records, and other relevant assets to the SRB.

Additionally, until new rules are formulated, existing RAB-related departmental proceedings rules will remain in force with necessary adaptations.
