The number of nomination aspirants from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the reserved women’s seats in the National Parliament has surpassed 1,200.

Over the past three days, female leaders and professionals have flocked to the party’s central office in Nayapaltan to collect and submit nomination forms.

While Sunday (April 12) was initially the deadline, the party has extended the submission period through Monday to accommodate the high volume of applicants.

Key Nomination Statistics
Forms Sold: Over 1,200 nomination forms were collected within three days.

Forms Submitted: More than 900 completed forms were submitted by Sunday night.

Deadline Extension: Due to the massive turnout, the office continued accepting forms until 9:00 PM on Sunday and will continue through Monday.

Diverse Pool of Candidates
The list of aspirants represents a wide cross-section of society, including:

Professional Groups: Teachers, lawyers, and entrepreneurs.

Cultural Figures: Several well-known artists and celebrities from the cultural arena.

Veteran Politicians: Long-standing party activists who have been at the forefront of recent political movements.

Internal Debate and Party Stance
The influx of "celebrity" candidates and those without a history of street-level activism has sparked mixed reactions and some resentment among veteran grassroots leaders. Critics argue that overlooking those who sacrificed during difficult political movements could weaken the party’s foundation.

Addressing these concerns, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi emphasized the party's criteria for selection:

"In this nomination process, we will select candidates based on organizational skill, merit, and intellect. It is not unusual for celebrities to join politics; their political support serves as a significant contribution even if they aren't active in field-level protests."

Rizvi also condemned any disrespectful behavior toward celebrity aspirants, noting that cultural icons often provide vital support to the party's platform and that their involvement should be welcomed.
