BCL activist shot in head, accused Farabi arrested

Police arrested Hasan Al Farabi Joy, the prime accused in the murder case of Bangladesh students League (BCL) activist Ashraful Rahman Ijaz in Brahmanbaria.

He was arrested on Saturday (June 8) morning.

Earlier on Thursday night, a murder case was filed against 16 people. The father of the deceased, Haji Md. Aminur Rahman filed the case.

The main accused Farabi, a master's student at Brahmanbaria Government College and the expelled vice-president of the district unit of BSL. Farabi's father Yakub Ali is a teacher of Sonargaon University in Dhaka.

The incedent took place on June 5 during the voting for the post of Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman.

During the time of voting Ijaz got into an argument with Jalal Hossain Bhuiyan, former Vice President of Brahmanbaria at the polling station.

The argument escalated when Jalal pushed Ashraful out of the queue when he tried to cast his vote. The accused, led by Jalal, threatened Ashraful.

When they reached the road in front of Jamal Mia's house at College Para around 6:15 pm, Jalal and the accused stopped Ashraful and his friends with pistols, machetes and various local weapons. Jalal handed over the pistol in his hand to Hasan and ordered Ashraful to be shot dead. Hasan Al Farabi shot Ashraful on the left side of his head with a pistol. He was taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital.
