The much-anticipated extension of Dhaka’s Metro Rail (MRT Line-6) from Motijheel to Kamalapur is expected to open for commercial operation on January 1, 2027.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMCTL) Managing Director Faruque Ahmed confirmed the timeline on Tuesday, noting that 69% of the construction work on the 1.16 km stretch has already been completed.

Despite initial plans for a 2025 opening, the project faced revisions and technical negotiations that pushed the date to early 2027. Project officials reported significant physical progress as of December 2025, with all 177 piles, pile caps, piers, and station columns successfully installed.

Key structural milestones—including the station’s concourse roof, platform slabs, steel roof erection, and 25 out of 27 spans—are also finished. Currently, the team is finalizing agreements for the installation of critical electrical and mechanical systems.

Once this final section is operational, the total length of MRT Line-6 will span 21.26 kilometers, connecting Uttara North (Diabari) directly to Kamalapur Railway Station.

The full route will feature 17 stations, including key hubs like Mirpur 10, Agargaon, Farmgate, and Dhaka University.

Since the Motijheel section opened in November 2023, the metro has become a lifeline for the city; current schedules see the first trains departing Motijheel at 7:00 AM and Uttara North at 6:40 AM, serving thousands of commuters daily.
