At least five people were injured, including two with bullet wounds, in a violent clash following a gun attack on a local BNP leader on the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court premises on Sunday morning.

Of the injured, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leaders Mahmud Uddin and Roni suffered bullet wounds.

The incident took place around 11 am, according to witnesses and local police.

Police said Liakat Ali Member, general secretary of the BNP’s Jhilongjha union unit in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, appeared before the court in connection with a murder case, along with his followers.

As he was leaving the court premises, rivals—believed to be followers of the case complainant—reportedly opened fire targeting him.

However, Liakat managed to escape the attack, though the shooting left Mahmud and Roni injured.

Following the gunfire, a chaotic clash broke out between the two groups, resulting in a chase and counter-chase that left three more people injured.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar, Ohidur Rahman, stated that law enforcement has arrested three individuals in connection with the incident.

The injured were rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for medical treatment, he added.
