An elderly man who was left stranded at no-man’s land along the Bangladesh-India border in Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj upazila has been successfully identified as a Bangladeshi citizen and rescued, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials confirmed on Thursday.

The rescued individual has been identified as 68-year-old Sosti Chandra Bormon, son of Babu Chandra Bormon, hailing from Chandlai village under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district.

According to Md Mokbul Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakshiganj Police Station, the elderly man was rescued early Thursday morning by BGB personnel.

This came after he spent around 24 hours stranded in the no-man's land near international pillar No. 1082 in the Ramrampur area under the Kamalpur border outpost.

"The man’s national identity card has been verified," the OC stated, adding that he was subsequently taken into safe custody at the Bakshiganj Police Station.

The standoff originally began on Wednesday morning when India’s Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to forcibly push him into Bangladesh through the Ramrampur border area.

The move triggered a highly tense situation involving local border residents, the BGB, and the BSF.

As the deadlock continued, a photograph of the stranded elderly man went viral on social media platforms and mainstream news outlets.

The widespread media coverage prompted his anxious family members in Rajshahi to contact the BGB and confirm his identity.

The OC further noted that his relatives from Rajshahi are already on their way to Jamalpur to receive him.

The local authorities will complete the necessary legal procedures before officially handing Sosti Chandra Bormon over to his family.
