Law enforcement personnel have detained 624 teenagers and young individuals during synchronized operations targeting youth gangs across Cumilla district.

Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfur Rahman stated on Thursday that adolescents and youths have recently been implicated in diverse criminal undertakings, causing an adverse societal impact.

He explained that coordinated drives were executed across all 18 police stations in the district, encompassing various locations within Cumilla city and areas with reported incidents of harassment by disruptive youths.

He added that high-ranking officials from the district police directly participated in the anti-gang operations. He noted that authorities are currently verifying whether the detainees have prior criminal records, after which appropriate legal measures will be initiated.

Concurrently, 28 youths were picked up on suspicion during a daylong drive in Daudkandi, Cumilla.

At approximately 10 pm on Wednesday, 22 of the detained youths broke through a door at the police station and departed while chanting slogans, with video footage depicting a commotion between the youths and their guardians outside the station circulating on internet platforms.

Downplaying the disturbance, Officer-in-Charge of Daudkandi Model Police Station Mohammad Sajedul Islam stated that no major event took place.

"Twenty-eight youths were detained as suspects for roaming around unnecessarily. When their relatives came together, there was some crowding," he said.

He clarified that 22 of the youths were handed over to the custody of their guardians at around 10:30 pm, while the remaining six individuals undergo further screening by police.
