Bagerhat Jail Inmate Dies at Hospital after Choking on Breakfast

An inmate at Bagerhat District Jail passed away at a hospital on Friday morning after reportedly choking on food during breakfast inside the correctional facility.

The deceased was identified as 44-year-old Chan Miah Faqir, son of Helal Uddin Fakir, hailing from Fulhata village in Morrelganj upazila.

Bagerhat District Jail Superintendent Md Mostafa Kamal stated that food became lodged in Chan Miah's windpipe while he was eating breakfast at approximately 7:50 am.

Prison authorities promptly rushed him to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, where he expired while undergoing medical care, he added.

Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar, superintendent of Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, confirmed that Chan Miah was transported to the medical facility from the prison in critical condition and died while receiving emergency treatment.

The jail superintendent noted that the body will be transferred to his family members following the completion of an inquest and post-mortem examination as per prison regulations.

Chan Miah had been remanded to prison on September 26 in connection with a case registered under the Special Powers Act.
