Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Tuesday announced the dissolution of the boards of five financially weak Shariah-based banks to form a single large Islamic bank.
The central bank authority sent a notice to the managing directors of the concerned institutions to inform its significant move of merger under the Bank Resolution Ordinance 2025.
The notice further stated that it will directly oversee the entire merger process.
The Shariah-based banks are First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Union Bank, Social Islami Bank and EXIM Bank.
Four of the banks were reportedly linked to the S Alam Group and one to businessman Nazrul Islam Mazumder during the former Awami League administration.
