Amid a rising trend of hacking and digital financial scams, Bangladesh Bank has issued a comprehensive set of directives urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when using mobile apps and online banking services.

The central bank recently reported that numerous customers have fallen victim to financial fraud through online banking. To prevent such incidents, Bangladesh Bank advises strict adherence to the following safety protocols:

Key Safety Directives
Keep Information Confidential: Never share bank account numbers, mobile banking PINs, passwords, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with anyone.

Beware of Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or installing free apps from unverified sources.

Avoid Unlicensed Schemes: The public is cautioned against unlicensed apps or offers of collateral-free online loans and investments circulating on social media under the names of institutions like Bangladesh Bank, the World Bank, IMF, and the Asian Development Bank.

Refrain from Online Gambling: Bangladesh Bank explicitly warned against participating in online gambling platforms, which are often linked to financial scams.

Verify Offers: Do not trust "lure" offers, such as lottery winnings or prizes, without independent verification.

Reporting and Assistance
Bangladesh Bank emphasized that maintaining maximum alertness is the best way to secure personal funds and protect others from falling into digital traps.

If a customer encounters any banking-related complaints, harassment, or fraudulent activity, they are advised to:

  • Contact their respective bank or financial institution immediately.
  • Report the incident to the nearest police station.
  • Call the Bangladesh Bank helpline at 16236 for grievances regarding banking and financial services.
