The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has launched an ambitious digital transformation drive designed to streamline, sanitize and bring accountability to the distribution of subsidized consumer staples.

Unveiled during an inauguration ceremony at the TCB conference room per an official press release, the comprehensive package incorporates smart TCB cards, the 'Upokari' mobile application, digital dealer administration, unified point-of-sale (POS) hardware, and artificial intelligence-driven live tracking.

Commerce, Industries, Textiles, and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir attended as chief guest, joined by special guests Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce, and Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan.

Addressing structural logistics, the commerce minister conceded that national supply chains remain short of seamless efficiency, pointing out recurrent price markups bridging farm gate/producer points and urban/metropolitan retail markets alongside transient supply contractions triggering market volatility.

"In this situation, the role of TCB is very important in ensuring essential commodities at subsidised prices for low-income people," the minister stressed, emphasizing that technological integration guarantees that state fiscal support lands with rightful recipients.

Running parallel to legacy card distribution, the newly launched 'Upokari' app authenticates consumer identity and entitlement via digitally signed, encrypted QR codes, ensuring vulnerable citizens retain access even if physical plastic is misplaced or ruined.

Administrative transparency is further reinforced through digital dealer lifecycle management—covering onboarding, record-keeping, and selection via computerized lottery when applicant pools overshoot capacity—paired with automated online revenue collection.

At the distribution terminal, multi-functional POS units handle inventory checkout, biometric confirmation, electronic settlement, and automated receipt generation.

Concurrently, AI-driven telemetry gives administrators live visibility into regional commodity turnover, flagging anomalies in real time to accelerate corrective interventions, backed by an AI-powered helpline for immediate user support.

Data vetting has already purged roughly 5.9 million fraudulent or unqualified entries following cross-checks against national identity databases and mobile registry logs, establishing a clean ledger supporting the current 7.9 million beneficiary base—with medium-term projections scaling coverage to 10 million households.

Through precision targeting and leakage plug-ins, leadership anticipates slashing subsidy expenditure by Tk300–350 crore in the current fiscal cycle relative to prior performance, targeting structural waste reduction over a four-to-five-year horizon.

Summarizing the reform philosophy, the minister declared, "Technology will be for the people, and services will be easy, transparent and dignified."

Proceedings opened with welcome remarks chaired by TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad, drawing senior ministry officials, institutional delegates, media representatives, and dignitaries before the formal rollout of the digital suite.
