
Jahurul Islam, a candidate from an independent panel, has been elected Vice President (VP) of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), while Mazharul Islam, backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, has been elected General Secretary (GS).
After a long wait, the final results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) elections have been officially announced.
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Md. Moniruzzaman announced the results on Saturday evening at the university's Senate Building.
According to the announced results, Abdur Rashid Jitu of the Independent Students’ Alliance panel was elected Vice President (VP). Mazharul Islam of the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Integrated Students' Alliance was elected General Secretary (GS).
Additionally, Ferdous Al Hasan was elected Assistant General Secretary (Male Student) and Ayesha Siddiqa Meghla was elected Assistant General Secretary (Female Student). Both are candidates from the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Integrated Students' Alliance.
The elected candidates for the other positions are:
Furthermore, the elected female executive members are Nabila Binte Harun, Faliha Jahan, and Nusrat Jahan Ima. The male executive members are Md. Tariqul Islam, Abu Talha, and Md. Ali Chisti. The winning members are all from the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, with the exception of Md. Ali Chisti, who is from the BAGCHAS-backed panel.
Polling for the election was held on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 21 residential halls. Afterward, ballot boxes were brought from the halls to the Senate Building, and vote counting began shortly after 10 p.m. The Election Commission stopped the counting on Friday afternoon after a continuous count since the previous night and called an emergency meeting.
The vote counting resumed at 7:30 p.m. that evening, and the Election Commission announced that the results would be declared on Friday night. However, after extending the time twice, it was finally announced that the results would be declared this evening.
The total number of voters in the JUCSU election was 11,743, including 6,015 male students and 5,728 female students. A total of 8,003 votes were cast, representing approximately 68% of the total vote.
A total of 177 candidates competed for 25 positions in the JUCSU, including 9 for Vice President (VP), 8 for General Secretary (GS), 6 for Joint General Secretary (Female), and 10 for Joint General Secretary (Male). Additionally, 445 candidates ran for positions in the hall unions.
The total number of male student voters and their respective halls were: Al Beruni Hall: 210, AFM Kamaluddin Hall: 333, Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall: 464, Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall: 298, Maulana Bhashani Hall: 514, Hall No. 10: 522, Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall: 650, Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall: 350, Hall No. 21: 735, Jatiya Kabi Nazrul Hall: 992, and Tajuddin Ahmad Hall: 947.
The total number of female student voters and their respective halls were: Nawab Faizunnesa Hall: 279, Jahanara Imam Hall: 367, Pritilata Hall: 396, Begum Khaleda Zia Hall: 403, Sufia Kamal Hall: 456, Hall No. 13: 519, Hall No. 15: 571, Rokeya Hall: 956, Fazilatunnesa Hall: 798, and Taramon Bibi Hall: 983.
A total of 177 candidates from 8 panels, including left-wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and independents, competed for the 25 JUCSU positions. Polling took place in 21 centers and 224 booths across 11 male and 10 female residential halls.
