Students of seven government colleges are staging protests and sit-in demonstrations on the road adjacent to Sikkha Bhaban in the capital, demanding the promulgation of the ‘Dhaka Central University Ordinance’ within the next three working days.
Dhaka Central University will combine Dhaka College, Government Bangla College, Government Titumir College, Eden Mohila College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College.
The students brought out a procession in the morning and took position in front of the Shikkha Bhaban around 11 am, halting traffic on the road and in the surrounding areas from Shikkha Bhaban towards the Secretariat.
Police set up barricades to prevent students from moving towards the Secretariat.
The students said they would not leave the road until the ordinance was issued. They also added that the government had called their representatives for a discussion, but they rejected the proposal.
They warned that if their demands are not met, they would announce tougher programmes, including separate demonstrations, at their respective colleges and sit-ins in front of the offices concerned.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that the process of forming Dhaka Central University, combining seven colleges in the capital, is underway.
The Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education published a draft ordinance on September 24 proposing the academic and administrative structure of the university and sought opinions from stakeholders.
They collected opinions directly and through email until October 9. On Sunday, the education ministry said more than 6,000 opinions have reached them.
The ministry said that the work of compiling and analysing the opinions was going on, and the process would be completed quickly, and a series of consultation meetings would be organised soon with stakeholders, including teachers, students, educators, and representatives of education-related members of civil society.
