An article titled ‘Memories of the War of Independence’ (Swadhinata Juddher Smriti), written by Sheheed President Ziaur Rahman, is set to be included in textbooks from the next academic year.

In addition, the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has taken an initiative to include an image of a historic diary he (Zia) kept at that time in textbook.

NCTB officials said the article will be added as a new chapter in the ‘Bangla Literature’ textbook for Class-IX and Class-X for the 2027 academic year.

The National Curriculum Coordination Committee (NCCC) has given the final approval to include this widely discussed document - considered a significant memoir of the history of the Great War of Liberation- in the curriculum.

NCTB Chairman Professor Mohammed Fakhrul Mawla told BSS that the NCCC has given final approval to include Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s article ‘Memories of the War of Liberation’ in the ‘Bangla Literature’ textbook for Class-IX and X, starting from the next academic year.

He said the government has taken this initiative to present everyone's respective contributions to textbooks in an impartial and objective manner.

Educationists and experts observe that after including this article, students will be able to learn without any bias about the historic “We Revolt” message broadcast from Chattogram and the eyewitness account of the declaration of the independence from Kalurghat; which marks a major milestone in presenting the objective history of the county’s 1971 War of Liberation.

Talking to BSS, eminent educationist and National Professor Dr Mahbub Ullah said this article written by Shaheed Ziaur Rahman holds historical value. Through it, students can become aware of the struggle for independence and its inclusion in the textbook is logical, he said.

Professor Shah Shamim Ahmed, a teacher of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University, said through the inclusion of this article, future generations will have the opportunity to learn the true and objective facts about the Liberation War.

“The incumbent government's view of presenting an objective and impartial history will put an end to the mindset that fostered a one-sided historical narrative during past political shifts,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Education, this decision to include the article in textbook was taken at a NCCC meeting on August 24. Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the ministry chaired the meeting.

The NCTB officials said the author biography section accompanying the 22nd prose piece in the Class IX-X 'Bangla Literature' textbook identifies Shaheed Ziaur Rahman as the declarer of the Great Independence, a former President, Army Chief, Commander of Z Force, Commander of Sector 1, and a recipient of the ‘Bir Uttam’ award.

Furthermore, the text characterizes the Liberation War as a comprehensive ‘people’s war’ and describes how, following the arrest of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after the genocide of March 25, the declaration of independence by the then-Major Ziaur Rahman served as a clarion call for the freedom-seeking people.

They said explanatory notes precede the main narrative of the essay. These notes cite two articles - 'Ekti Jatir Jonmo' (Birth of a Nation), published in Dainik Bangla in 1972, and 'Swadhinata Juddher Smriti' (Memories of the War of Independence), published in the now-defunct Dainik Desh in 1980 as unique documents of the Liberation War, affirming that the Bangladesh’s independence was not the achievement of any single individual or party.

The text acknowledges key figures - Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Maulana Abdul Hamid Bhashani, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman (declarer of independence), and Tajuddin Ahmad (first Prime Minister of independent Bangladesh) -as indispensable names in the history of Bangladesh's independence and Liberation War.

The officials further added that the essay vividly portrays the commencement of the War of Independence through an armed uprising in Chattogram in March 1971, the declaration of independence from the Kalurghat Radio Station, and the unique story of sacrifice of front fight.

Bangladeshi Student Team 'Polaris' Wins CERN’s Beamline for Schools Contest
A cohort of young scholars from Bangladesh has triumphed in the thirteenth iteration of CERN’s esteemed Beamline for Schools (BL4S) contest, representing the nation's inaugural win in the international scientific competition. The victorious Bangladeshi group, designated as Polaris, clinched the honor alongside competing teams originating from the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, and India, as outlined in a bulletin released by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva. This accomplishment materialized amidst intense rivalry, drawing 712 squads across 89 nations to this year’s BL4S tournament, which stands as a premier global academic contest for school and college pupils. The triumphant domestic squad consists of learners hailing from institutions situated in Noakhali, Rangpur, and Dhaka. The youngsters received a reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva, during which they recounted their progression from executing scholarly trials utilizing constrained resources domestically to performing their ultimate evaluation at the University of Bonn and CERN. Their research centered on polysiloxane-derived plastic scintillators designed for high-energy electron beam profiling and was executed at the ELSA accelerator housed within the University of Bonn. She recalled that the cornerstone for partnership between Bangladesh and CERN was established back in 2012 when the diplomatic post in Geneva mediated the execution of an Expression of Interest (EoI) bridging the two parties. This collaboration was subsequently consolidated via the signing of an International Cooperation Agreement (ICA) in 2014. The aforementioned measures unlocked novel prospects allowing Bangladeshi scientists, engineers, investigators, and scholars to engage in the academic and training frameworks of CERN, according to the official statement. The Permanent Mission characterized the pupils' victory as a testament confirming that the populace of Bangladesh, specifically its younger generation, persists as the country's paramount asset.

Schedule for 2027 SSC Exams Published
The 2027 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations will commence on January 7 next year. This decision has been taken to save students' valuable time and align with the international education calendar. The Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee has stated that the exams will be held as scheduled and there is no scope to postpone the timetable. Professor Syed Akteruzzaman, Chairman of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and Dhaka Education Board, stated that the 2027 SSC exams will begin at the scheduled time announced by the government. Prior to that, institutions have been instructed to complete the designated syllabus and conduct the test examinations. According to the government's 2026 academic calendar, the SSC test or selective examinations are scheduled to be held from October 28 to November 10. The results of the tests must be published by November 18. Consequently, students will get nearly two months of time to prepare for the SSC exams after the conclusion of the test exams. However, compared to previous years, the preparation time has decreased slightly. Typically, students receive two and a half to three months of preparation time after finishing their selective examinations. Pre-test exams have already concluded in various educational institutions across the country. Many institutions are preparing to finish their curricula ahead of schedule and conduct test examinations by mid-October. Along with the capital, Dhaka, several institutions in various divisional and district cities are making similar plans. Nevertheless, most institutions are preparing to hold test exams in accordance with the government academic calendar. As a result, students in these institutions might get less than two months of preparation time before the SSC exams. This has sparked concern among students, guardians, and teachers. They apprehend that reduced preparation time following the selective exams could create additional pressure on students, which might also affect their exam results. However, Professor Syed Akteruzzaman believes that if the curriculum is completed on time and test exams are conducted accordingly, students will not face major problems in their preparation. He has urged institutions to finish the syllabus on time and prepare the students. On the other hand, teachers at various educational institutions state that it may not be possible for all institutions to complete the curriculum by mid-October. Particularly in institutions outside urban areas, a reduction in preparation time raises concerns about students developing learning gaps. For a long time, SSC exams traditionally began in early February and HSC exams in early April. However, maintaining that schedule has not been feasible since the coronavirus pandemic. The 2026 SSC exams began on April 21, and the HSC exams started on July 2. Professor Syed Akteruzzaman noted that students are losing several months of their academic lives every year due to various reasons. As a result, students aspiring to pursue higher education abroad are also facing issues due to session jams. According to him, the exam schedules must be gradually normalized to bring academic year activities back on track. The initiative to hold the 2027 SSC exams in early January is part of that process. He stated that by organizing exams at the scheduled time, it will be possible to minimize the valuable time lost from students' academic lives.
