A catastrophic wave of wildfires has swept through southern Chile, claiming at least 18 lives and forcing more than 50,000 people to evacuate their homes.

Hundreds of houses have been destroyed as fires continue to rage across at least two dozen active locations.

The Chilean government has declared a State of Emergency and a state of catastrophe in the regions of Biobío and Ñuble to combat the rapid spread of the flames, which have already scorched approximately 50,000 acres of land.

Rising Death Toll and Evacuations
According to reports from Al Jazeera and the BBC on Monday (January 19), President Gabriel Boric confirmed the death toll has reached 18 but warned that the number is expected to rise. To maintain order and facilitate rescue efforts, a nightly curfew has been imposed in the hardest-hit areas.

The regions of Biobío and Ñuble, located roughly 500 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago, are the epicenters of the disaster. President Boric stated on X (formerly Twitter) that "all necessary resources have been mobilized," allowing the military to join firefighters in the emergency response.

Towns Under Siege
Authorities have prioritized evacuations in the Biobío towns of Penco and Lirquén, which have a combined population of around 60,000.
