The second round of US-mediated talks between Ukraine and Russia concluded in Abu Dhabi without a formal agreement. Despite the lack of a deal, both sides hinted at progress and signaled a willingness to continue negotiations.
The high-stakes peace talks, held on Friday and Saturday (January 23–24), were facilitated by the United States amid ongoing hostilities. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed that representatives from Russia and Ukraine engaged in direct, face-to-face discussions.
A UAE government spokesperson noted that the "US-backed peace framework" dominated the sessions. While the atmosphere was described as "positive and constructive," the core focus remained on difficult terms: conditions for ending the war, the future of the contested Donbas regions, and a potential ceasefire regarding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Leadership Perspectives
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the discussions as "constructive," noting that the U.S. has proposed "possible frameworks" for peace, including security guarantees essential to the process.
Zelenskyy expressed readiness to move forward, suggesting a follow-up meeting could happen as early as next week if both parties agree.
Similarly, the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that Moscow remains open to future rounds of negotiations.
The Role of US Envoys
Prior to the Abu Dhabi summit, US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held a four-hour marathon meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. US officials described that meeting as "very productive," focusing on remaining pathways to end the conflict. However, those high-level talks have yet to translate into a signed ceasefire.

The diplomatic efforts stand in stark contrast to the intensifying violence on the battlefield. On Saturday alone, Ukraine reported at least 61 combat engagements with Russian forces, with the heaviest fighting concentrated in the Pokrovsk sector.
