The United Nations reported on Wednesday that approximately 100,000 people fled Tehran during the initial 48 hours of the military campaign launched by US and Israeli forces.

The conflict, which began with intense strikes on February 28 and March 1, has triggered significant internal displacement within the Iranian capital.

In a situation report, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) confirmed the figures but noted that the movement has remained largely domestic so far.

"Latest reports indicate no increase in cross-border movements linked to recent events," the agency stated.

Specifically, the situation at the Islam Qala border crossing with Afghanistan is described as stable, with no significant influx of refugees observed at this stage.

The war was ignited by a massive US-Israeli offensive that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In the days since, Iran has retaliated with a series of missile and drone strikes targeting installations from Israel across the Persian Gulf, deepening the regional crisis.
