Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reacted sharply to "indecent" comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Pope Leo XVI, the supreme leader of the Catholic Church.
In a statement released on Tuesday (April 14), Meloni described Trump's remarks about the Pope as "unacceptable." She emphasized that as the head of the Catholic Church, it is both natural and right for the Pope to call for peace and condemn all forms of warfare.
The friction follows earlier comments by Trump during a press briefing, where he criticized the Pontiff.
"We don't like a Pope who thinks it's acceptable for countries to have nuclear weapons while also wanting us to be soft on nations that develop them and put the world at risk of destruction," Trump stated.
Furthermore, Trump labeled the Pope as "weak" and "unfit" to handle international relations. Analysts believe that such rhetoric between religious and political leaders could spark fresh controversy on the global stage.
