A devastating fire has erupted at the Viva Energy refinery near Geelong, Victoria, one of only two remaining operational oil refineries in Australia.

The blaze broke out at approximately 11:00 PM local time on Wednesday (April 15) within the facility's motor gasoline unit. According to a report by Deutsche Welle, the scale of the fire has sparked fears of a major energy crisis across the country.

Emergency Response and Public Safety
As of 9:00 AM Bangladesh Time on Thursday, fire crews were still working to bring the flames under control. Fortunately, although roughly 100 employees were on-site when the fire started, no casualties have been reported.

Authorities have issued emergency alerts for approximately 300,000 residents in Geelong and surrounding areas due to the risk of toxic smoke and chemical dispersion.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, keep windows and doors tightly shut, and avoid outdoor activity until the smoke clears.

Impact on Fuel Supply
The Geelong refinery is a critical piece of infrastructure, supplying over half of Victoria's fuel needs and roughly 10% of Australia's total fuel requirements.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen stated in a briefing that while petrol production will be "severely impacted," efforts are underway to maintain limited production of diesel and jet fuel.

Economic Context
Energy analysts warn that the timing of the disaster is particularly critical. Australia is already grappling with fuel security concerns as regional tensions between Iran and the United States continue to disrupt global supply chains through the Strait of Hormuz.
