The body of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been moved to the holy city of Qom today, Tuesday, July 7, for further funeral rites and a massive mourning procession, as reported by Iran's state news agency, IRNA.

Qom’s Governor-General, Akbar Behnamjou, confirmed that funeral prayers were held at the holy Jamkaran Mosque at 6:00 AM this morning. Local authorities are anticipating a record-breaking turnout for the ceremony.

Following the prayers, a massive mourning procession is scheduled to move from the Payambar-e Azam Boulevard toward the Shrine of Hazrat Masumeh (AS), with all official preparations in the city now complete.

This follows a significant mourning procession in Tehran that began at 6:00 AM on Monday, departing from the Grand Mosalla religious complex. The late leader’s body had been lying in state at the complex for two days to allow for public viewing.

The Tehran procession, which spanned a 10-kilometer route including Damavand Street, Imam Hossein Square, Inqilab Street, Azadi Street, and the Shahid Lashgari Highway, was expected to last between 10 to 12 hours.

On Sunday, Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani led funeral prayers for the late leader and his family members—his son-in-law Dr. Mesbah-ul-Hoda Bagheri-Kani, his daughter Zahra Haddad-Adel, his 14-month-old granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi-Golpayegani, and Sayyedeh Bushra Hosseini.

According to the official itinerary, the funeral proceedings will continue on Wednesday, with the body being taken to Iraq.

The procession will visit the Shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf, as well as the shrines of Imam Hussain (RA) and Hazrat Abbas in Karbala.

In accordance with his final wishes, Ayatollah Khamenei is scheduled to be laid to rest on July 9 within the precincts of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.
