The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been thrust into a significant controversy amidst the fervor of the FIFA World Cup.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a formal investigation into the organization’s financial transactions and various operations conducted within the United States.

According to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, investigators have already begun recording testimonies from several witnesses.

Focus of the Investigation
According to reports, investigators are scrutinizing how the AFA, under the leadership of Claudio Tapia, has managed its commercial and administrative operations on U.S. soil.

The primary focus of the probe is to determine whether the multi-million dollar transactions processed through the American financial system complied with U.S. law, or if they involved any financial irregularities or criminal activity.

As part of the ongoing inquiry, federal prosecutors from Washington D.C. and Miami, along with FBI officials, conducted a three-hour interrogation of businessman Guillermo Tofoni via video conference.

However, the focal point of the investigation remains AFA President Claudio Tapia, as his decision-making and the financial activities under his tenure are receiving the most intense scrutiny.

Expanding Scope
The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to widen the scope of the investigation.

Sources indicate that there are plans to bring several former officials from the administration of Argentine President Javier Milei under questioning.

These individuals, who monitored AFA’s activities or held key insights into the association’s significant financial data in recent years, may be called to testify.

While preliminary preparations for this investigation reportedly began in 2025, the public emergence of these findings during the World Cup has created significant tension and sparked widespread debate within the Argentine football community.
