Indian officials retrieved seven corpses from waterways originating in Nepal on Friday, suspected to be casualties of catastrophic floods, highlighting the immense magnitude of the fatal catastrophe.

The remains were discovered drifting in rivers traversing the Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts of Uttar Pradesh state, which shares a border with Nepal's southern flood-affected Chitwan region.

"Four unidentified bodies were recovered in the district on Thursday," Maharajganj district magistrate Gaurav Singh Sogarwal informed AFP, adding, "We think they have been swept into India from Nepal following flash floods there."

A trio of additional bodies was pulled from the water in Kushinagar district, situated approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) downstream from the international boundary, a law enforcement official verified.

Authorities are currently striving to ascertain the identities of the deceased.

A minimum of 472 individuals perished in the deluge, comprising 469 corpses retrieved within Nepal and three inside China, while at least 1,400 other people remain unaccounted for, and the seven bodies found in India are excluded from that official casualty count.
