At least 62 fatalities have been recorded across northern India’s Uttar Pradesh following several days of torrential rain and widespread inundation, officials confirmed Monday.

According to the state government, three days of relentless downpours triggered severe flooding in multiple districts, leaving 46 individuals injured and damaging over 1,000 homes.

Local authorities ordered the closure of educational institutions on Monday in several regions, including the state capital Lucknow, as rescue units relocated residents from submerged localities to safer ground.

Officials advised the public to refrain from non-essential travel through waterlogged roads and to maintain a safe distance from fast-flowing rivers, streams, and drainage channels.

Precipitation is anticipated to ease from Monday onward as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal loses intensity, according to Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow.

Singh noted that light rainfall could still persist across eastern and western sections of Uttar Pradesh through Tuesday.

Concurrently, flooding struck the eastern state of Odisha, where officials reported that more than 75,000 residents were evacuated to safer areas.

In neighboring Nepal, 21 people perished in weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday, according to the national disaster management agency.

The agency added that five individuals remain missing, five others sustained injuries, and 194 houses were damaged by floods and landslides.
