Protesters attempted to surround the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Saturday, demanding the security of minorities in Bangladesh and the release of Chinmoy Das.
Tensions flared up in the area surrounding the mission following the demonstration.
The protest was jointly organized by the Vivekananda Mission Seba Pratisthan and the political party National Citizen Party of India (NCPI).
The march began from the Sealdah railway station, drawing over a hundred monks and nuns from the Vivekananda Mission Seba Pratisthan alongside roughly 60 supporters from the NCPI.
As the procession advanced toward the Bangladesh mission, Kolkata Police halted the group with barricades stationed about 300 yards away. Scuffles broke out as demonstrators attempted to remove the barriers and push forward.
The escalating tension temporarily brought traffic around the mission area to a standstill.
Police prevented the crowd from approaching the mission's entrance directly.
Later, following permission from mission authorities, a five-member delegation entered the premises to submit a memorandum outlining demands for minority protection in Bangladesh and the release of Chinmoy Das.
The demonstrators continued their protest for a short while after submitting the memorandum before dispersing from the area.
The NCPI was recently formed by several parliamentarians who broke away from the Trinamool Congress, and the party is currently aligned with the BJP-led coalition. Members of the faction participated in Saturday's protest.
