A series of bomb threats targeting passenger aircraft caused widespread disruption to air travel across Europe. At least seven flights and an Israel-bound cruise ship were targeted with threats on Tuesday (November 3).

The incidents prompted the temporary closure of an airport in Warsaw, Poland, while an Italian Air Force fighter jet escorted a Ryanair aircraft to Rome. However, all aircraft landed safely, and subsequent searches yielded no explosives.

According to Al Jazeera, all threats received on Tuesday later proved to be hoaxes. Officials reported that at least seven flights and a cruise ship heading toward Israel were targeted, though every aircraft landed safely without any hazardous materials being discovered.

Airlines affected by the incidents include Ryanair, Wizz Air, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), and Poland's national carrier, LOT Polish Airlines. Ireland's low-cost carrier Ryanair appeared to be the hardest hit, with four of its flights to various destinations receiving threats.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the threats, and officials have not blamed any specific party. These incidents occurred just a day after a Bulgaria-bound flight was diverted to Hungary following similar bomb threats while in mid-air.

Al Jazeera reported that two flights bound for Warsaw were targeted on Tuesday. Subsequently, Scandinavian Airlines flight SK751 from Copenhagen landed normally at Warsaw Chopin Airport. One of the airport's runways was temporarily closed while the aircraft was inspected.

"Passengers have disembarked. The plane landed normally; it was not an emergency landing," Alexandra Lindgren Cauqui, a spokesperson for the airline, told the Polish news agency PAP, adding that the matter has been handed over to Polish police.

A LOT Polish Airlines flight arriving from London Heathrow was also scheduled to land at Chopin Airport. Following the threat, it was diverted to Warsaw's secondary airport, Warsaw Modlin Airport, which was also temporarily closed after the alert was issued.

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft landed safely. "Nothing was found," said Modlin Airport spokesperson Adam Szabłowski, noting that normal operations resumed shortly afterward.

In Italy, two Eurofighter jets intercepted and escorted a Ryanair flight (FR9611) from Dublin to Fiumicino Airport in Rome. Airport management stated that the aircraft landed at 10:45 AM local time.

The Italian Air Force stated that it took immediate action upon receiving reports of a "potential threat to a civil aircraft."

Earlier, another Ryanair flight arriving from Lisbon landed at Fiumicino Airport at 9:40 AM and underwent specialized security checks for explosives. Airport management confirmed that after inspecting passengers, luggage, and the aircraft, nothing dangerous was found and the alert was lifted.

In Spain, the national airport operator Aena stated that it initiated emergency security protocols after receiving a "bomb threat" on a Ryanair flight arriving from Manchester. The aircraft landed safely in Murcia at 10:30 AM local time without incident.

In Bulgaria, a Wizz Air flight arriving from Bergamo, Italy, was inspected after landing in Sofia, according to a Ministry of Interior spokesperson. The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport added that another Ryanair flight from Dublin to Sofia was also targeted, though no explosives were found on any of the aircraft.

These incidents followed similar occurrences on Monday, when a Wizz Air flight from London Luton Airport to Sofia received an airborne bomb threat and was diverted to Budapest.

Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky (referred to in local reports as Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi) stated on Facebook that NATO's air defense alert system had flagged the flight, prompting Hungarian Gripen fighter jets to "take to the skies within minutes" to guide the aircraft to a safe landing.

In the United Kingdom, London's Metropolitan Police reported receiving threats regarding four aircraft slated to depart from or land at Heathrow Airport, one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs.

Police also received a separate warning concerning a flight at Manchester Airport. Following searches, police stated that "no security issues were identified," though no further details were provided.

Meanwhile, late Tuesday night, the Greek Coast Guard reported that about 1,500 passengers and crew were evacuated from the Panama-flagged cruise ship Crown Iris, which was anchored near the island of Syros following a bomb threat.

The vessel was sailing toward Israel’s Haifa port. No explosives were found on board, and the ship was expected to resume its journey shortly.

No nation has been blamed for the bomb threats. However, the warnings coincide with European officials accusing Russia and Iran of carrying out "hybrid attacks" and sabotage operations—allegations that both Moscow and Tehran have denied.

Earlier this week, anonymous hackers remotely shut down refrigerators in supermarkets across several European countries. Some experts suggest that the hoax bomb threats may be part of similar low-cost, plausible-deniability efforts to cause widespread disruption.

Rhys Jones, head of analysis at aviation risk consultancy Osprey Flight Solutions, noted that receiving seven confirmed bomb threats in a single day causing widespread flight disruptions is highly unusual.

"These threats were not aimed at any specific country, airline, or route," Jones told Reuters. "This suggests the primary objective was to cause widespread, generalized disruption to aviation."
