U.S. President Donald Trump has admitted that the ongoing war with Iran played a role in the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm elections.
He made the remarks following a major Democratic victory in Tuesday’s (November 3) elections.
With Democrats poised to gain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, President Trump’s legislative agenda faces potential gridlock.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday (November 4), Trump stated that Democrats would send legislative proposals to his desk that he considers "crazy," emphasizing that he intends to veto them.
"They're going to send proposals that will seem absurd to me, and I will veto them," Trump said. "After a few months of vetoes, they will end up calling me themselves to ask how we can move forward. That's when we'll work together."
When asked whether the war with Iran contributed to the Republican defeat, Trump acknowledged its impact, saying,
"I think Iran was a factor. But at the same time, people have also come to realize the importance of the actions I took regarding Iran."
According to a report by Reuters, the Democratic victory in the elections will significantly complicate the implementation of Trump's legislative plans in Congress.
In particular, the Republican president will now be forced to negotiate and compromise with the opposition party to pass new legislation.
