An Amazon cargo plane crashed while landing at Miami International Airport in the United States, leaving at least five people dead.

Following the accident, the aircraft caught fire and collided with multiple vehicles, injuring five others, three of whom are in critical condition.

Airport operations were temporarily suspended in the wake of the disaster.

According to Al Jazeera, the incident caused major disruptions at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

In a social media post, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the Boeing 767-300 aircraft failed to stop within the designated runway after landing at around 2:00 PM local time on Sunday (September 6), overrunning the end of the runway.

The accident occurred as a result. The flight was arriving in Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Miami-Dade County officials announced in a press conference that five other people were injured, with three in critical condition and the remaining two hospitalized with less severe injuries.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that the plane caught fire after the crash and struck "multiple vehicles" along its path.

More than 60 fire and rescue units worked to extinguish the blaze and assess the condition of those affected.

Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah stated that several people were trapped inside motor vehicles following the crash, while the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the aircraft.

The exact number of crew members or passengers onboard the plane was not immediately known.

Jadallah added that fuel was leaking from the aircraft hours after the accident, which rescue workers were working to contain.

Meanwhile, an Amazon spokesperson stated that the aircraft was operated by 21 Air and that an "incident" occurred during landing.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said, "We are working closely with local authorities and officials to find out exactly what happened.

At this moment, the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved is our top priority. We are doing everything possible to support those affected."

Online videos showed thick black smoke billowing from the crash site near the runway.

Despite the fire, a large portion of the aircraft appeared to remain intact.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, the 32-year-old aircraft had been used as a passenger plane for over two decades before being converted into a cargo freighter in 2015.

Preliminary reports indicated that the plane veered off the runway and crossed a road near the airport perimeter.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the agency that investigates major transportation accidents, stated that it is aware of the incident and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the ministry temporarily suspended all arrivals and departures at Miami International Airport following the accident, urging passengers to prepare for "significant delays."

The cause of the accident is not yet known. The FAA confirmed that it is investigating the incident.
