
Law enforcement agencies have arrested 17 individuals in connection with the recent attacks on the offices of national dailies Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, as well as the cultural organizations Chhayanaut and Udichi. The arrests follow an investigation that utilized video footage to identify at least 31 suspects.
The breakdown of the 17 arrests includes 13 individuals apprehended by local police, three by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and one by the Detective Branch (DB). These developments were formally shared by DMP's Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam on Monday during a press briefing held at the DMP Media Center on Mintoo Road in the capital.
Earlier, a press release from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing confirmed the arrest of nine of the 31 identified suspects. The seven arrested by local police were identified as Md Kashem Faruk, Md Saidur Rahman, Rakib Hossain, Md Naeem, Faisal Ahmed Prant, Md Sohel Rana, and Md Shafiqul Islam. The remaining two from that initial group were apprehended by the CTTC and DB.
Details released by the authorities reveal that Rakib Hossain, a resident of Sherpur, was caught on video participating in arson and vandalism before posting provocative content on social media. Another suspect, Md Naeem, from Tejgaon's Kunipara area, was apprehended in Cumilla with BDT 50,000 in looted cash. He admitted to stealing a total of BDT 1,23,000, which he used to purchase a television and a refrigerator; both items have since been seized.
Furthermore, Md Sohel Rana and Md Shafiqul Islam, arrested near the Karwan Bazar railway line, were found to have significant criminal records. Sohel Rana faces 13 previous cases in various Dhaka police stations, including narcotics charges, while Shafiqul has two prior cases related to arson and "cocktail" (improvised explosive) explosions.
Among the other arrestees, Kashem Faruk is a former student of Al-Jamia Al-Islamia Kasemul Uloom Madrasa in Bogura and a resident of Mohammadpur, while Md Saidur Rahman hails from Noakanda village in the Bhanga upazila of Faridpur.
Law enforcement officials, who briefed Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday, also noted that three individuals involved in disturbances near the Assistant High Commission of India in Chattogram have been identified.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed a formal case and emphasized its commitment to protecting media institutions, stating that further arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
