The High Court has stayed the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Central Student Union (SUCSU) election, which was originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan issued the postponement order following a writ petition. The court's decision effectively halts all polling activities at the Sylhet-based university until further notice.
The petition was filed on Sunday by Maminur Rashid Shuvho, an independent candidate for the SUCSU polls.
He argued that the student election should be suspended in light of the Election Commission’s (EC) directive, which mandates the suspension of all other electoral activities prior to the upcoming13th National Parliament Election 2026 and the Referendum, scheduled to be held on February 12.
During the hearing, Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol represented the petitioner, while Advocate Mohammad Hossain Lipu appeared for the SUST administration.
Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque represented the state. The court also issued a rule calling on the Chief Election Commissioner and other relevant authorities to explain why the election should not be officially deferred to avoid any conflict with the national polls.
