A local court on Sunday granted a seven-day remand for a youth in a case lodged under the Anti-Terrorism Act regarding an offensive Facebook remark mentioning a "sniper" following the publication of a photo covering Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to Rajshahi on the social media platform.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farjana Haque issued the directive when law enforcers presented Md Abu Bakar Siddique, 22, before the tribunal and requested a seven-day remand in the lawsuit registered with Ramna Police Station.
According to case records, three photographs of the motorcoach transporting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman were uploaded to the Facebook community 'The Beauty of Rajshahi' on October 21.
In the remark thread, a Facebook profile titled 'MD Abu Bakar Siddique' posted: "Alas, there was a great opportunity, only a sniper was missing".
Utilizing information technology, security personnel traced the account user and apprehended Abu Bakar Siddique from the Gholharia Dakshinpara locality under Paba Police Station within Rajshahi Metropolitan City.
His mobile device was confiscated during the operation.
An inspection of the handset reportedly uncovered objectionable remarks published across diverse Facebook pages and groups.
In connection with this incident, DB Cyber and Special Crime (North) Division Sub-Inspector Md Manik Hossain instituted a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Ramna Police Station in the capital city on October 23.
