The High Court (HC) on Monday granted a six-month bail to Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Bagerhat Jewel Hasan Saddam on humanitarian grounds, allowing him to mourn the tragic loss of his wife and infant son.
The decision comes after heart-wrenching scenes at the Jessore Central Jail gate, where Saddam was permitted a final farewell to his 22-year-old wife, Kaniz Subarna Swarnali and their nine-month-old son.
Because the family lacked the time and resources to navigate the formal parole application process through the district administrator, the bodies were brought directly to the prison for a brief, emotional viewing.
The tragedy unfolded on January 23 in the Sabekdanga area of Bagerhat Sadar upazila. According to family members, Swarnali had fallen into a deep state of mental distress and hopelessness due to Saddam’s prolonged incarceration.
Relatives believe that out of sheer despair, she killed their infant child before taking her own life. Police later recovered Swarnali’s body in a hanging position, while the child was found on the floor of their home.
During the final meeting at the jail gate, witnesses described an atmosphere of overwhelming grief as Saddam held his son in his arms for the first and last time.
Prison authorities confirmed that Saddam had been held at the Jessore facility since December 15 in connection with multiple cases.
Family sources noted that Saddam had frequently sent notes from jail promising a swift release, messages that relatives believe inadvertently added to Swarnali’s psychological burden.
Following the post-mortem examinations at Bagerhat District Hospital, the High Court’s intervention now provides Saddam a temporary reprieve to perform the final rites and grieve with his remaining family.
