The Bangladesh Army has detained Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed in military custody following crimes against humanity charges linked to the 2018 death of Ekramul Haque, a former municipal ward councillor in Teknaf.

An official from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), requesting anonymity, confirmed to a local media that the active-duty senior army officer was taken into military detention on Monday.

"The next course of action against him is being taken in accordance with the law," the ISPR official stated regarding the procedural steps ahead.

The military detention comes shortly after prosecutors formally submitted charges on Sunday to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) concerning the alleged crimes against humanity tied to Councillor Haque's death.

The formal charge sheet lists 11 individuals as accused, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed was also implicated in the formal charge for his role during the incident, when he held the rank of lieutenant colonel and served as the commanding officer of Chattogram-based RAB-7, which held jurisdictional oversight over Cox's Bazar at the time.

The victim, Ekramul Haque—who served as a Teknaf ward councillor and headed the local upazila unit of the Juba League, the youth wing of the Awami League—was killed on May 26, 2018, in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf area during an event officially reported at the time as a "gunfight."
