Indictment Hearing in Arms Case against Anisul Huq Oct 26

A court here today (Thursday) set October 26 for holding a hearing on charge framing in a case filed under the Arms Act against former law minister Anisul Huq.

Today (Thursday) was fixed for holding the hearing on the matter, but Dhaka Special Tribunal-4 deferred it as the regular presiding judge was on leave.

According to the case documents, the government, through a circular issued on August 25, 2024, suspended the arms licences granted between January 6, 2009 and August 5, 2024, and instructed licensed arms holders to deposit their firearms and ammunition at the nearest police station by September 3, 2024.

If any arms and ammunition were not deposited within the stipulated time, those would be treated as illegal and cases would be filed accordingly.

Police filed the case against Anisul Huq on May 24, 2025, as there was no information about whether the former law minister had surrendered his licensed weapon in line with the August 25, 2024 circular, and no such weapon was found at the address mentioned in the arms licence.

Law enforcement recovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat 203, situated on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban, on the evening of September 20, leading to the immediate detention of the Satkhira-4 lawmaker and his first wife. Following the incident, Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, lodged a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the morning of September 21, naming Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman as accused parties for allegedly abetting the suicide.
