Due to significant improvement in her health, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who has been undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom, returned home after 17 days of treatment at a London clinic.

On Friday, January 24, at 9:30 PM London local time (3:30 AM Bangladesh time), Tarique Rahman brought Khaleda Zia to his residence. Doctors have advised her to continue her treatment at home for now. However, if needed, she will visit the hospital for follow-up consultations.

Doctors reported that the heart issues of the BNP chairperson have been resolved, but her primary concern remains her kidney. Initially, the treatment provided at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka was not fully supported by the London clinic’s doctors. Subsequently, a new treatment regimen for her kidneys was initiated. A few days ago, her creatinine level (used to assess kidney function) crossed the borderline, worsening her condition. However, after new treatments, her condition has improved significantly.

Earlier, on Thursday, Khaleda Zia’s personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, stated that her test reports would be received by Friday night. He also mentioned that if everything looked good, she might be discharged. Even after being released from the hospital, the former prime minister will remain under the constant care of Professor Patrick Kennedy and Jennifer Cross.

Regarding a potential liver transplant for Khaleda Zia, Dr. Hossain stated that a decision has not yet been reached. He explained that her age is a factor under consideration. Additionally, he pointed out that she had been deprived of proper treatment during her incarceration. If she had been taken abroad earlier, her recovery might have been quicker. The medical team believes that a liver transplant could have been done earlier.

Dr. Hossain also mentioned that Khaleda Zia is currently undergoing treatment for multiple health issues, including liver, kidney, heart, diabetes, blood pressure, and rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions are being managed with medications for now. Members of the medical team from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States had also participated in a medical board meeting in London to explore further treatment options.

Earlier, on January 8, Khaleda Zia traveled to London for advanced medical treatment. She was directly admitted to the private hospital "The Clinic" upon her arrival at Heathrow Airport. Earlier, on the night of January 7, the former prime minister and BNP chairperson left Dhaka on a special air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar.
