Bangladesh’s political landscape is bracing for a rare contested presidential election as the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formally initiated its nomination process, while an 11-party opposition alliance confirmed it will field Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Col (retd) Oli Ahmad as its contender.

On Sunday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni visited the Returning Officer’s office at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon to collect two nomination forms for the party’s prospective presidential candidate.

Explaining the decision to secure multiple documents, Chief Whip Moni clarified that the party acted to preclude any procedural errors or omissions.

"We have taken the forms for one person, but collected two so that there is no error or omission. The forms have not been collected in anyone’s name," he stated, noting that the party intends to submit the formal papers in accordance with the official electoral timeline.

This administrative move mirrors the strategy employed by the former ruling Awami League in 2023, when the party collected two forms for its candidate, Mohammed Shahabuddin; one was subsequently validated while the other was automatically voided. Election rules place no restriction on the number of nomination papers obtained or filed for a single candidate.

Concurrently, the opposition bloc spearheaded by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami announced its unified candidate. The decision to nominate Col (retd) Oli Ahmad was finalized during a meeting held at the official Minto Road residence of Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.

The announcement was publicly declared by Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam.

The Election Commission (EC) announced the presidential schedule on August 6, following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24.

Voting is slated for August 20, should a contest materialize. According to the EC calendar, candidates must submit nomination papers between 10 am and 4 pm on August 13.

Scrutiny of the filings is scheduled for August 16, with the final deadline for the withdrawal of candidature set for August 18.

If multiple candidates remain in the fray, the ballot will be cast at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban between 2 pm and 5 pm on August 20.

Should the election proceed with more than one candidate, it will mark the first competitive presidential race in Bangladesh since 1991, the year the parliamentary system was restored.

In that historic election, BNP’s Abdur Rahman Biswas defeated the Awami League’s Badrul Haider Chowdhury. In every subsequent election, the ruling party’s nominee has been elected unopposed.

Political analysts anticipate that the BNP candidate will secure a comfortable victory, given the party’s commanding single majority in Parliament.

Under Article 70 of the Constitution, lawmakers are strictly prohibited from voting against their respective party lines.

Should the Jatiya Sangsad not be in session, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin is authorized to convene a one-day special sitting—deemed a non-regular parliamentary session—in consultation with the Speaker, at least seven days prior to the polling date.
