Bangladesh Batters at Low Ebb in BPL Ahead of Champions Trophy
Bangladesh's national batters, who are set to represent the country in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, have struggled to make an impact in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). With the group stage nearing its conclusion, only Tanzid Hasan Tamim has managed to secure a spot among the top 10 run-scorers, raising concerns about the team’s batting form ahead of the global event.
Tanzid Hasan Tamim, opener for Dhaka Capitals, stands second on the BPL batting chart with 330 runs from nine matches at an impressive strike rate of 138.65, including a century. Despite his individual brilliance, his team has failed to make a significant mark in the tournament.
Soumya Sarkar, who is likely to open alongside Tanzid in the Champions Trophy, has recently resumed practice after recovering from a finger injury sustained during the West Indies series. Representing Rangpur Riders, Soumya is yet to make his mark in the BPL but is expected to return to the field soon.
Among other national players, Jaker Ali Anik, used as a finisher for Sylhet Strikers, has scored 175 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 150.86, placing him 20th on the batting chart. Khulna Tigers captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed just 126 runs in seven matches, while Towhid Hridoy, who shone in the previous BPL with 462 runs, has struggled this season with 121 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 131.52.
Parvez Hossain Emon, replacing Liton Das in the Champions Trophy squad, has had a quiet campaign with only 103 runs in seven matches for Chittagong Kings. Senior players Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim have also underperformed. Mahmudullah scored 84 runs in four matches, while Mushfiqur managed 73 runs in as many games, as he continues to recover from an injury. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s form remains a concern, with just 56 runs from five matches.
Despite the lackluster performances from local batters, Fortune Barishal, led by Tamim Iqbal, has won five matches, thanks to contributions from foreign players.
On the other hand, Bangladesh’s bowlers have delivered promising performances. Taskin Ahmed leads the bowling chart with 20 wickets in nine matches, although his team, Durbar Rajshahi, struggled to secure playoff qualification. Tanzim Hasan Sakib claimed 11 wickets, while Nahid Rana took nine in seven matches for Rangpur Riders. Mustafizur Rahman, though not at his best, has nine wickets in nine games.
Spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, and Rishad Hossain have also contributed, taking five, four, and four wickets, respectively, despite limited opportunities.
As the Champions Trophy approaches, Bangladesh will hope their batters find form quickly to complement the promising performances of their bowlers.
