Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), congratulated the national football team after they secured a historic win against the India national football team on Tuesday night.
The Men in Red and Green broke their 22-year curse with a thrilling 1-0 victory over their South Asian arch-rivals in their second-leg match of the ongoing AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualification (Third Round) at the National Stadium in Dhaka.
Following the match, Tarique Rahman wrote on his Facebook page, "After 22 years, Bangladesh's victory against India today on the football pitch reminded us all what we can achieve with discipline, unity, and belief.
Morsalin’s early goal and the team’s relentless spirit have reignited hope in millions of hearts about the future of sports for our people.
Our footballers stand as inspirations to our youth and are ambassadors for our sports culture. A brighter future for Bangladeshi sporting success awaits the nation, where talent is nurtured, dreams are supported, and our flag continues to rise higher."
Star forward Sheikh Morsalin scored the match-winner for the home team in the 12th minute of the first half, following a brilliant assist from forward Rakib Hossain.
However, the true anchor of Bangladesh's resistance was Hamza Choudhury, who marshalled the backline brilliantly to help end the 22-year winless run against their arch-rivals.
Although Bangladesh have no chance to qualify for the next round of the ongoing tournament, the win moved them to third position in the four-team Group C table with five points from five matches.
India remained bottom of the table with two points, having played the same number of matches.
