Bangladesh logged their initial win in men's hockey at the 20th Asian Games by thrashing Sri Lanka 5-1 in a dominant fixture at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Nagoya, Japan on Thursday.

Bangladesh controlled the contest from the opening whistle and established an early lead in the first quarter courtesy of a strike from Amirul Islam.

The team widened their margin in the second quarter as Roman Sarker's side maintained steady authority over the match.

Amirul Islam and Ashraful Islam bagged a brace each for Bangladesh while Mahbub Hossain added a single goal to round out the scoring for the red-and-green outfit.

The Bangladeshi team earned over fifteen penalty corners across the game, maintaining relentless pressure on the Sri Lankan defensive line.

Although Sri Lanka managed a lone response through Kushal, the goal served as mere consolation while Bangladesh routinely sealed all three points.

The outcome represents Bangladesh's first victory in the men's hockey tournament at the ongoing Asian Games.

Bangladesh will complete their remaining group stage fixtures when they take on Indonesia and India on September 26 and 28 respectively at the same venue.

In their preceding group fixtures, Bangladesh started their Asian Games campaign with a 5-0 loss to South Korea before suffering a 6-1 defeat against Japan in their second outing.

Bangladesh hockey official Md. Zahid Hossain has been elevated to the International Panel of Technical Officials by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), representing a major milestone for the nation's hockey community, Bangladesh Hockey Federation said in a press release.

The advancement was formally confirmed via a letter signed by FIH President Tayyab Ikram on Wednesday, noting that the decision was finalized by the FIH Technical Officials Committee.

His promotion to the international roster stands as significant recognition of Bangladesh's expanding presence and technical caliber in global hockey governance while serving to motivate upcoming domestic officials and reinforce the country's representation across international hockey administration.
