Spain has returned to winning ways in their first competitive match since becoming world champions. In a thrilling Nations League encounter at Wembley, 'La Roja' defeated England 3–2.

Spain took an early lead. In the second minute, Lamine Yamal capitalized on a mistake by Marc Guéhi to win possession; the Spanish star then coolly found the net to put the world champions ahead.

However, England quickly fought back. In the 36th minute, Anthony Gordon leveled the score for the hosts off a pass from Jude Bellingham. Just four minutes later, captain Harry Kane headed home a cross from Nico O'Reilly to give England a 2–1 lead.

England maintained their attacking momentum in the second half. In the 53rd minute, the referee awarded England a penalty following a VAR review after Bellingham was fouled. However, Kane failed to extend the lead from the spot, as his shot struck the post and rebounded back into play.

The momentum shifted after the missed penalty. In the 60th minute, substitute Álex Baena scored from a Dani Olmo pass to bring Spain level at 2–2.

Both teams then pushed desperately for a winner. Finally, in the 74th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal scored by converting a low pass from Baena, putting Spain ahead 3–2.

England tried in vain to equalize during the final 16 minutes. Consequently, world champions Spain emerged victorious from the thrilling five-goal contest at Wembley.

With this win, Spain kicked off their 2026–27 Nations League campaign successfully. Meanwhile, England - who finished third in the World Cup - suffered a defeat on home soil at the start of the new tournament.
