Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his national team duties, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to light up club football.
The Portuguese superstar scored a brilliant goal in Al Nassr's victory over Uzbek side Neftchi Fergana in the second round of the AFC Champions League, moving closer to the historic 1,000-career-goal milestone.
Al Nassr secured a 3-1 victory over Fergana at King University Stadium late Monday night (October 12).
Ronaldo's side took the lead in the 30th minute when Ângelo beat goalkeeper Botirali Ergashev following an assist from Nawaf Boushal.
The goal provided a much-needed boost after Al Nassr suffered an early blow in the 15th minute when Kingsley Coman was forced off with a muscle injury.
Ayman Yahya came on to replace Coman. As the first half drew to a close, Ronaldo doubled Al Nassr’s lead, converting a pass from Ayman to net the team's second goal.
The strike marked the 981st goal of his professional career, leaving him just 19 goals shy of the monumental 1,000-goal benchmark.
In the second half, Fergana pulled one back through a goal from Alisher Odilov.
However, Uzbekistan’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Anvarjon Gofurov scored an own goal, extending Al Nassr’s lead to 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
During the recent international break, Ronaldo left the national team camp prematurely following a disagreement with Portugal’s head coach. His early departure ahead of the Denmark match resulted in a temporary suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation.
Disregarding the controversy, however, Ronaldo has now scored in two consecutive matches for his club.
