Despite Drama and Boycotts, BCB Board Election Held Today

After weeks of high-stakes drama—including allegations of government interference, the mass withdrawal of 16 candidates followed by four more, and opposing court injunctions—the election for the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is finally being held today.

Voting is taking place at a five-star hotel in the capital on Monday (October 6), running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

According to the schedule, the names of the winning directors will be announced by 6:00 PM. Following this, the elections for the President and Vice-President are scheduled to take place at 7:30 PM.

Boycotts and Legal Battles

A significant number of candidates from Categories 1, 2, and 3 have withdrawn, with many heavyweight candidates boycotting the election. Those who boycotted initially sought to have the election cancelled by appealing to the sports adviser and submitting a three-point proposal, and later delivered a memorandum to the Chief Adviser 24 hours ago.

On Sunday (October 5), a crucial court hearing took place regarding a writ petition challenging a letter sent by BCB Chief Aminul Islam Bulbul to District Administrators and Divisional Commissioners. The fate of 15 clubs under observation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was also up for a hearing. Given all this, there was widespread speculation whether the election would even proceed or if a sudden postponement would be announced. However, all rumors have been put to rest, and the BCB election is proceeding as scheduled today.

Initially, a court stay on the election for the 15 contentious clubs created a scenario where only 61 club councilors would vote. However, the court later lifted the stay on the 15 clubs, meaning all 76 club councilors are eligible to vote. However, those who formally withdrew their nomination papers cannot contest, though they can still cast their votes.

The Race Narrows Down

With a total of 15 candidates, including Tamim Iqbal, Fahim Sinha, and Rafiqul Islam Babu, withdrawing their nominations, the excitement and competitiveness for the Dhaka Club Quota (Category-2) seats have been significantly reduced.

Nevertheless, 17 candidates are still contesting for the 12 directorial positions under the Dhaka Club Quota (Category-2). The election in Category-1 (District and Divisional) will be largely uncontested; 10 directors will be elected by 72 votes, but nine directors have already been elected unopposed.

Consequently, only the Rangpur Division seat will see a contest in Category-1 today, with a three-way fight between Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, Rehatul Islam Khoka, and Mohammad Nur E Shahadat Swapon.

Elections were also scheduled for the Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions, but the third candidate in Dhaka, Redwan Fuad, and Hasibul Alam of Rajshahi announced their last-minute withdrawal. Therefore, like Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet, and Barishal, the Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions will not hold an election.

Dhaka Division: Aminul Islam Bulbul and Nazmul Abedin Fahim
Chattogram: Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury and Asif Akbar
Khulna Division: Abdur Razzak and Zulfikar Ali Khan
Sylhet Division: Rahat Shams
Barishal Division: Shakhawat Hossain

The period since the announcement of the BCB election schedule on September 1 has been marked by significant controversy in Bangladesh cricket.
