Due to the combined effect of a new moon and a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, 16 coastal districts in Bangladesh are at risk of being inundated by tidal surges.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued Special Bulletin No. 3 on Thursday afternoon, warning that wind-driven tidal surges 2 to 4 feet higher than normal may flood low-lying areas of Chattogram, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Hatiya, Sandwip, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, and Satkhira, including nearby islands and coastal chars.
As a precaution, maritime ports in Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3. Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been instructed to remain in safe shelter until further notice.
According to the bulletin, the deep depression currently located over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas has begun crossing the West Bengal–Bangladesh coast. It is expected to move further north and complete landfall by Thursday evening, gradually weakening thereafter.
