The country has been experiencing a persistent heatwave over the past several days. Anticipating a further temperature rise, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a special alert for the next 72 hours.
In a bulletin released Friday afternoon, the Met Office warned that the ongoing mild to moderate heatwave across much of the country is likely to continue. It also cautioned that in some areas, the heatwave may intensify and reach severe levels within the 72-hour period starting from 2 pm on Friday.
According to the weather forecast valid until 9 am on Saturday, daytime temperatures may rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius across the country, while nighttime temperatures could also see a slight increase.
Meanwhile, Chuadanga recorded a scorching 41.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country.
Currently, mild to moderate heatwaves are affecting districts including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Rajarhat, Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Feni, Noakhali, Chattogram, Bandarban, Barishal, and Patuakhali. The divisions of Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Khulna are also under the grip of intense heat, and conditions are expected to persist.
